Winter outings add up fast for a family — but there are several legitimate ways to visit area museums, zoos, and children’s museums for free or at a steep discount. Below we explain how each program actually works and who qualifies, so you can plan the season around them. Because these programs and their calendars change, we do not publish specific free dates unless we can verify them; always confirm on the venue’s own site before you go.
If you already belong to a museum or zoo — or are thinking of joining one — your membership card may get you into other museums on a road trip. The catch is almost always a distance rule, and it trips up a lot of families (and a lot of blogs). Here is how each network actually works.
The ASTC Travel Passport gives members of a participating science center free general admission at hundreds of others. But the fine print matters: it excludes any museum within 90 straight-line miles of either your home science center or your home address. From Naperville, that radius swallows the Chicago museums and reaches to about Rockford — and Milwaukee sits close enough to the line that it depends on your exact address. In practice, an ASTC card is a benefit for farther trips (Madison, Peoria, St. Louis, vacations), not a free ticket into nearby museums. Many AZA-accredited zoos give reciprocal free or 50%-off admission to members of other participating zoos. But participation is voluntary and patchy — notably, Brookfield Zoo Chicago does not participate in the AZA reciprocal program, so a membership elsewhere will not get you in (and a Brookfield membership is not a reciprocity pass for other zoos). Check the current reciprocal list of both your home zoo and the destination before assuming anything.
The big Chicago institutions concentrate their Illinois-resident free days in the winter off-season — exactly when you want an indoor outing. The recurring patterns, verified for 2026: the Field Museum offers free basic admission to Illinois residents every Wednesday (reserve the free timed ticket, bring IL ID); the Shedd Aquarium posts blocks of free days across January and February (reserve ahead — free by phone, small fee online); the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry and Adler Planetarium cluster free weekdays in January–March; and Brookfield Zoo Chicago covered most Jan–Feb weekdays in 2026 (parking still charged).
