Midwest winters are long, and there are only so many hours of screen time a parent can stomach. This is our survival guide for the cold months, November through March — a single starting point that pulls together warm places to go both close to home and within a couple hours’ drive of Naperville. Weekday mornings right at opening are calmest at museums. The busiest times are free-admission days, the week between Christmas and New Year, and long weekends like MLK and Presidents’ Day. Timed-ticket events such as holiday light shows sell out on weekends, so book those days ahead.
